Big Names – New Releases

Summer is winding down and I hope everyone has been enjoying a good read or two. Or twelve for the lucky ones! Many of us were struggling with getting in the page turns so twelve might be a stretch … too many distractions. I have to say when I forced myself to turn off, tune out, and sit with a book, there were great reads to be had this summer. And, if finding a book that “speaks to you” was the challenge, you no longer have that excuse. I think this Fall may have more intriguing releases than any other I recall. Get a load of this list – strictly confined to new releases by tried and true writers. If you’re not familiar with the earlier book, you get two to consider. I imagine most of you have read the old and might be keen to try the new. I know what the good writers were doing those last two weird Covid summers … writing!

Going to the Movies!

It seems movie makers have been inspired by our bookshelves lately and that’s not a bad thing. No debate from me that the book usually takes the cake over the movie but, based on their trailers, I think these will translate to the big screen quite well. If it’s not in the theatre quite yet, it will be soon.
Crazy Rich Asians
I admit, I started off as a reluctant reader of this book when it was selected for book club but ended up enjoying it immensely. The movie looks like just as much pure designer-dressed family saga fun.
The Children’s Act
One of Ian McEwan’s (of Atonement book and movie fame) more recent books. This looks awfully compelling!
The Bookshop
Was impressed by Emily Mortimer in The Newsroom series. Here she is nestled among books and huge stars, Patricia Clarkson and Bill Nighy.
Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
I’ve already seen this one (it’s new to Netflix) and it’s lovely, heartwarming entertainment.
Bel Canto
Can’t wait! Ann Patchett’s Bel Canto remains one of my favourite stories of all time.
Juliet, Naked
So many of Nick Hornby’s novels have appeared on screen and this is the latest.

Movie tie-in Book Covers

It seems all the good books are destined to become movies someday. I still prefer to read the book first and often don’t see the movie version for fear it will ruin a good thing. Isn’t half the fun of reading “seeing” the character in your own mind through the writer’s vivid description? My casting and that of the movie people’s doesn’t always jive. When it comes to book covers I’m just as stubborn – I rarely go for the movie-tie-in cover and would rather hunt high and low to find the original version. I’ve enjoyed conversations recently with some who share my anti-movie cover bent and others who embrace the “Now a Major Motion Picture!” version. Which do you prefer?
(Note: The One Day movie poster(above) has just been released and is much complimented. I imagine due to its popularity the movie-tie-in cover will be similar when it is revealed. We’ll have to wait and see!)
