I love the experience of reading: pondering what to read next, surveying friends to see what they’ve enjoyed recently, journeying to the bookshop or library, viewing the cover art, reading the blurbs, checking out the author’s bio, sniffing the pages (Yes, sniffing the pages. Come on, I know you do it too! Surreptitiously of course) finally making a selection and then setting it on the bedside table in eager anticipation of it becoming a new favourite. Sometimes (alright! alright! frequently) the selections get a bit ahead of me and the bedside table supports a small tower. When the tower gets dangerously high and there is risk of personal injury, some books move to the floor. Floor Books didn’t have the same ring to it for a blog.
Knowing I am not the only one suffering this condition I thought I’d create Bedside Table Books with the purpose of providing a friendly and fun spot to carry over some of the chat we so enjoy when we meet at the water-cooler, in front of school, in the coffee shop, or on a dog walk. Bring your book suggestions, your thoughts about writers and reads, your photos of your bedside table if you dare!

A Letter in the Mail….I will enjoy reading one of these novels as my first read that is not a text book. I have a box full of letters between my parents during world war II, 402 to be exact, and perhaps these reads will inspire me to do something creative with the letters and share the history of the war era. Thank you for the inspiration Susan.

My dear friend, Sue. I always have said that reading anything you’ve written, whether it’s a letter, an email, an article (or even listening to a phone message) is like opening a gift tied up with a big, red bow. You have such a way with words and your thoughts are truly joyful and inspiring. I love your blog and I’m continuing to spread the word across the prairies about this little treasure that you’ve created!

Hey Susan – love your blog! Great recommendations. The Best Laid Plans was hilarious and very timely. I had already read about the bonobos and loved the book. One Day was entertaining. Have you read Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese? Excellent read, one of those books that just gets better and better the more you get into the story.

Thanks Pat! So glad you mentioned Cutting for Stone. It was a great read and as you say, drew one in ever closer as the pages flipped.
